Light Rail Transit

Close Up of Metro Train

About the METRO Green Line Extension

Rapid growth in the southwest metro area is putting more demands on our existing roads and transit systems. By 2030, cities in this area are expected to add 55,000 residents and 83,000 jobs.

The METRO Green Line Extension, a 14.5-mile light rail line with 16 stations serving Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie, will connect to the existing Green and Blue lines at the Target Field Station in Downtown Minneapolis.

Hopkins will have three stations on the line.

Project Status

Construction of the METRO Green Line Extension began in 2019. As of December 2021, the phase of the METRO Green Line Extension project to install tracks and construct structures and stations is 60% complete, with 11 of the 16 stations under construction or nearly complete, and the first tracks in place. Over the past 2 years, the project has encountered construction challenges that have caused delays.

Heavy construction is scheduled to occur until 2025, followed by systems work and operations testing. The Green Line Extension is expected to begin passenger service in 2027. Once open, it’s expected to see weekday ridership of 34,000.
